Sync Story: Inside Mallrat's Google Pixel

Sync Story: Inside Mallrat's Google Pixel

From the same corner of the pop world as Grimes and Skrillex, Brisbane artist and brand new Nettwerk Music signing Mallrat is beginning her ascent in earnest.

Taken from the teenager’s Uninvited EP, out now, For Real has been chosen by Google to soundtrack their colourful new Pixel smartphone spot, and the match makes perfect sense.

The ad celebrates Pride Month with the message ‘Room for everyone’, and the song’s positive message reflects that sentiment. Mallrat (real name Grace Shaw) sounds blown away by the sync: “This Google thing is so cool!” she says.

“I wrote For Real on the school holidays, about my friends. I definitely didn’t expect that it would reach so many people.”

Meanwhile, Steve Stromp, director of advertising & branding at Nettwerk Music Group in New York, says the track is ideal for sync.

“It combines a bouncy piano rhythm with electronic elements, the lyrics are all positive and empowering and about doing your own thing. All those things come together to make it especially catchy and great for sync.”

Expect Mallrat - who first emerged in 2015 as a 16-year-old with electro/hip-hop/pop mash up SuicideBlonde and has more than 300,000 monthly listeners on Spotify - to reap the benefits.
