What's Somesuch's Hannah Turnbull-Walter listening to this week?
I’m really looking forward to seeing what Rex Orange County does next. I’m a big fan of Jamie T and King Krule, so it is completely unsurprising that I’m excited by him and his music.
He’s only 18-years-old, flipping young. He’s from Haslemere in Surrey and has just left the BRIT school. I was sent his new track UNO and was instantly into it. It’s a song about being sad, or maybe choosing not to feel sad.
Rex switches between lo-fi crooning and gently intoned spoken lyrics and a happy-go-lucky chorus. His heart is on his sleeve, it’s a confessional track about feeling out of place and out of sorts. ‘I’m trying to be a man but really I’m just a likkle child’, he sings.
It’s really like listening to a massive teenage mood swing. ‘I should just say fuck it and be happy instead’. Good advice there. Green Eyes (Part II) is another track on his SoundCloud that I love.
His press shot is goofy and fun, it’ll be interesting to see what the videos are like. Annie Mac has backed his track, A Song About Being Sad, which also featured in a video from Odd Future affiliates and skate outfitters Illegal Civilisation, you can hear it on his SoundCloud too.
I’m sure word will spread about him soon! Fellow up-n-comer Cosmo Pyke supported him at his first headline show, so he’s in good company. I’m very annoyed that I missed his last London show recently, more fool me!
