This week’s Making Waves act may have a questionable name, but their messy punk rock makes an immediate impact. Get to know Viagra Boys…
KEY TRACK: Sports
LABEL: Year 0001
MANAGEMENT: info@year0001.com
TWITTER: @ViagraBoys
WHO: Benke, Benis, Tor, Sebbe, Martin, Rasmus and Konie, Sweden’s latest punk export.
WHAT: The band call their clunking noise ‘street blues’. It’s an apposite moniker for their songs, ribald, monstruous things that sound like the product of many boozy hours spent sweating into vests and shouting incessantly.
WHERE: Stockholm, Sweden.
WHAT’S THE NAME ABOUT?
Hmmm. Punk? The name is silly, but when you hear the music, it makes more sense: the three songs on their recent Sports single are built to shock and goad. Literate wordplay and rusty brass form a caustic mix.
SOUNDS MESSY…
It is, but Sports Team do precision, too. Check out the billowing outro to Beijing Taxi, which teams random mutterings (“All that remained was a toaster”) with fluttering woodwind.
OK, I’M IN…
Righto. The Boys’ debut LP is coming soon, and they hit the UK in September.
