Ed Sheeran on course to make chart history

Ed Sheeran is on course to make chart history with comeback songs Shape Of You and Castle On The Hill.

Sheeran dropped the two new tracks in the early hours of Friday morning, both of which were outstripping the rest of the Top 10 combined in yesterday's Official Charts Company sales flash. Shape Of You is leading the race for No.1 with 83,000 chart sales after just 48 hours, while Castle On The Hill trails closely behind in second place, according to the Official Charts Company.

If both tracks remain at the top on Friday’s final chart placings, then Sheeran could set a new Official Chart record as the first artist to enter the Official Singles Chart at No.1 and No.2 with two brand new tracks.

Sheeran has already notched up two No.1 singles with 2014’s Sing and Thinking Out Loud, and has penned further chart toppers for the likes of One Direction and Justin Bieber.

Sheeran also broke Spotify's first day streaming record with both of his comeback singles, reaching more than 13 million global streams combined in the first 24 hours. Shape Of You attracted 6,868,642 streams and Castle On The Hill accumulated 6,168,395, which saw him overtake previous day one record holders, One Direction, who notched up 4,759,698 streams with Drag Me Down in August 2015.

Stay tuned to Musicweek.com for the Official Charts midweek sales flash at 6pm today.
