The 1975’s headline slot at Reading & Leeds next year is a “natural step”, Jamie Oborne has told Music Week.
Speaking in the latest issue, the band’s manager at All On Red and Dirty Hit label boss looked ahead to the summer 2019 festival by which time The 1975 are expected to have another new album.
A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships, released on Friday (November 30), is tipped to be one of the big Q4 releases, following the platinum sales success of 2016’s I Like It When You Sleep, For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware Of It. The new campaign’s dual release strategy will combine A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships with 2019 sequel Notes On A Conditional Form.
“The plan is for Notes On A Conditional Form to be released prior to our performance at Reading & Leeds,” said Oborne. “The campaign will be reaching a great pace by then. It will be very exciting - we are just getting started!”
The 1975 headlined the Radio 1 stage at Reading & Leeds in 2016. Oborne said the ambition was always to achieve the same position on the main stage.
“It’s been a long-term goal of ours to headline Reading & Leeds festival,” he said. “It feels like a natural step for the band and it’s so exciting to have another great British headliner for such an important UK festival. I am very proud of the boys.”

The 1975 will join 2019 headliners Twenty One Pilots, Foo Fighters and Post Malone. The line-up also includes Billie Eilish, Not3s, Juice Wrld, Blossoms, Stefflon Don and Dirty Hit's Pale Waves.
“I feel that Reading & Leeds is a great modern festival and as such it feels perfectly natural to have such a diverse line-up,” said Oborne. “It is perfect for The 1975 whose mantra is ‘We create how we consume'. I think it will be a perfect moment for them as they cement their status as a truly culturally important British band.”
The 1975 will also be lining up major festival appearances for 2019, including a headline set at Glasgow Summer Sessions.
“The festival activity globally will be significant and we are looking forward to taking our new show on the road,” said Oborne. “The show is incredible - Matty has been working with long-time collaborator and friend Tobias Rylander to ensure it is like nothing else we have seen before.”
