Jack White embarks on mission to play first vinyl in space

No, it’s not a belated April Fools story, Jack White really is bidding to play the first ever phonographic record in space as part of Third Man Records’ 7th anniversary celebrations.

On July 30th, White’s company will attempt to play a gold-plated 12” master of Carl Sagan’s A Glorious Dawn in space.

The record will be sent into space via a custom-built “space-proof” vessel named The Icarus Craft – a turntable attached to a high-altitude balloon.

To mark the occasion, Third Man Records will be hosting parties at both its Cass Corridor and Nashville location, where attendees will be able to watch footage of the pre-recorded launch. The footage will also be streamed online, with details to be announced soon at the Third Man Records website.

There will also be performances from live bands, while exclusive commemorative merchandise will be available, including 12” gold vinyl presses of A Glorious Dawn.
