Kylie Minogue was hoping for the sixth number one album of her career on Sunday but instead George Michael racked up the ninth number one of his career, debuting in pole position with Symphonica on sales of 49,989 copies.
The two veterans - Michael is now 50, and Minogue is 45 - lead the biggest intake of the year, which sees 13 albums debut inside the Top 40, five of them in the Top 10.
