After first making waves on SoundCloud, Xxxtentacion released his debut studio album 17 last August via Bad Vibes Forever. It has sold 64,863 copies to date according to Official Charts Company data. His second studio album ? was released in March 2018, it has sold 38,321 to date in the UK, while in the States it debuted at No.1 on the Billboard 200.
A huge hit on streaming, Xxxtentacion songs such as Jocelyn Flores (368,351,469) and Sad! (271,496,424) racked up impressive numbers.
The rapper had, however, attracted a huge amount of controversy in his short lifetime. In 2016, Xxxtentacion was charged with aggravated battery of a pregnant woman, domestic battery by strangulation, false imprisonment, and witness-tampering. Onfroy denied each claim.
Last month, both Xxxtentacion and R Kelly ran foul of Spotify’s newly-instated policies on hate content and hateful conduct, which resulted in the barring of both from curated playlists. The streaming giant stated:
“When we are alerted to content that violates our policy, we may remove it (in consultation with rights holders) or refrain from promoting or playlisting it on our service,” said Spotify. “It’s important to us that our values are reflected in all the work that we do, whether it’s distribution, promotion, or content creation.”
On June 1, Spotify scrapped a key part of its combined measures on hate content and conduct, following a backlash against its “vague” approach to removing certain artists from playlists. Today (June 19), in the wake of the rapper's death, Spotify’s enormously popular Rap Caviar playlist was headed: ‘Rest in peace Xxxtentacion’.
While social media was divided concerning his passing, owing to his controversial past, a host of musicians have taken to Twitter to pay tribute to the late rapper:
