Swedish collecting society STIM is locked in a legal dispute with car rental firm Fleetmanager over whether or not music played in-car by hire customers should be considered public performance.
Under the Copyright Act, individuals who write music and lyrics are entitled to remuneration when their music is performed in public.
Fleetmanager’s cars all contain CD players and radios, which, STIM argues, means that the company needs a license for music played in public.
