The total number of digital singles sold in the UK hit 1 billion last night, according to data tracked by the Official Charts Company.
The landmark was reached late yesterday evening, Monday 8 April 2013, nine years after legal downloads launched in the UK.
Since digital downloading took off in the UK in 2004, sales have exploded from around 500,000 a week to more than 3 million each week.
